Christmas Day Movie Guide

Christmas Day typically launches one or two Oscar contenders in order to meet the deadline for nominations, but this year seven new films in all genres compete for your holiday box office dollars. Keanu Reeves, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sylvester Stallone, Robert DeNiro, Julia Roberts and Ralph Fiennes are a few of the famous faces squaring off at the movie theaters.

ACTION

Lone Survivor


Based on the true story of Navy SEAL team in Afghanistan who lost their lives in 2005, LONE SURVIVOR stars Mark Wahlberg as sole survivor Marcus Luttrell. The film recounts the day the soldiers are tasked with mission "Operation Red Wings" to take out Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. When the mission is compromised, they come under attack by the Taliban.

47 Ronin

In the mood for some Japanese-style action? Keanu Reeves returns to the action genre as a samurai in 47 RONIN. Reeves is Kai, a half-breed in the Samurai community out for revenge for his master's death along with a band of samurai who do not accept him as one of them. In love with his master's daughter, the forbidden love drives Kai to rescue her from the ruthless shogun who used sorcery to have his master killed.  Win 47 RONIN T-shirt

 

 

COMEDY

The Wolf of Wall Street
Leonardo DiCaprio plays a self-destructive Wall Street stockbroker in the Martin Scorsese film based on the true story of Jordan Belfort. The film chronicles his rise to filthy rich status from defrauding investors during the 1990s along with his partner in crime Donnie played by an annoyingly good Jonah Hill.

 

 

Grudge Match

Another comedy choice includes these two heavyweights. Sylvester Stallone and Robert DeNiro square off in the ring in GRUDGE MATCH. The comedy pits Rocky Balboa against Raging Bull as fighters coming out of retirement for one last bout.  Win GRUDGE MATCH Prize Pack

 

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
The third comedy entry this Christmas includes Ben Stiller as daydreamer Walter Mitty who decides to stop fantasizing and start living the exciting life he's always imagined. He embarks on a global journey to impress his love interest, Kristen Wiig.  Stiller also directs.

DRAMA

 

August: Osage County

If you don't have enough family drama at home, check out Meryl Streep as a mommy dearest with a host of screwed up family members. The Weston family comes together for a crisis which brings together an  ensemble of Hollywood names. AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY stars Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Margo Martindale, Sam Shepard, Dermot Mulroney, Juliette Lewis, Abigail Breslin and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The dramedy opens in limited release on Christmas Day and expands nationwide on January 10, 2014.

The Invisible Woman

Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter) directs and stars as literary legend Charles Dickens. The man behind such classics as A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations apparently took on a young lover which he kept secret until his death. Felicity Jones plays his much younger mistress. THE INVISIBLE WOMAN opens in select cities.
