3 New 'Star Wars' Movies Announced with Daisy Ridley Returning, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni Directing

Daisy Ridley returns as Rey in a sequel set 15 years after RISE OF SKYWALKER with director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), and Dave Filoni is finally making a movie that will encompass the Disney+ series and celebrated director James Mangold will be jumping to lightspeed for a prequel about the first Jedi.
At the STAR WARS Celebration in London Friday, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced three projects are in the works with each representing the past, present, and future of the STAR WARS universe. She described each film's premise.
THE PAST
"The First Jedi will wield the force and harness its liberating power in an era of chaos and oppression.THE PRESENT
"Expanding upon our present, Dave Filoni will orchestrate the escalating war between the Imperial remnant and the fledging New Republic.
alongside Producer Jon Favreau, they will bring together many of the threads of our series in that cinematic event we've been promising you."THE FUTURE
"As we head into the future, 15 years after the events of RISE OF SKYWALKER. Sharmeen will be telling the story of rebuilding the new Jedi order and the powers that rise to tear it down."
Each director went into more detail about their new production. Kennedy first welcomed INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY director James Mangold (LOGAN, FORD V FERRARI, 3:10 TO YUMA) who will helm his first sci-fi flick with a STAR WARS prequel. Mangold expanded on his new STAR WARS film.

Mangold talked about his influences for the new STAR WARS prequel which takes us back 25 thousand years.
"Thinking what kind of genre STAR WARS film I'd like to make, I thought about a kind of biblical epic, like a TEN COMMANDMENTS and the dawning of the force. Where did the force come from? When did we discover it?"
He added that he sought out the "canon-ites" and historians in developing the story. "It's an exciting story to tell, and I can't wait to tell it," he said.
STAR WARS veteran storyteller Dave Filoni was next up to promote his movie, but he was coy about his project.
"I'm just excited I get to make a movie. I get to make a movie with these guys. That's really cool so this moment is not lost on me. So if I talk about this, I don't have to talk about that movie. It remains safe."
While the movie will be a culmination of the Disney+ series, he says he will be drawing from new things and stories about the New Republic that he grew up on in addition to the original movies.
"We're bringing it all together into this epic battle that takes place unfortunately for our heroes after the events of RETURN OF THE JEDI and THE FORCE AWAKENS."
Then the biggest news from the Star Wars Celebration dropped. Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be helming a RISE OF SKYWALKER sequel starring Daisy Ridley as Jedi Master Rey. After vowing to be done with the franchise, somehow Lucasfilm and Disney wooed the actor back to the universe.
The Star Wars Celebration crowd cheered when Obaid-Chinoy introduced a surprise guest. Ridley walked out to a shocked audience. "My heart is pounding," she said.
Obaid-Chinoy told the audience she has always been attracted to the hero's journey. Was she referring to the book George Lucas was heavily influenced by? Lucas followed The Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey to create his Skywalker saga.
The STAR WARS saga is something she can relate to.
"I've spent a better part of mylife meeting real heroes fighting against aggressive regimes and battling impossible odds," she told the audience. That is the heart of STAR WARS." She added, "I'm attracted to a promise of a new Jedi order and I'm attracted to the idea of immersing myself in a Jedi Academy with a powerful Jedi Master."
According to Kennedy, these three new movies aren't the only ones in the pipeline. "We have so much more that we will be sharing over the next several months," teased Kennedy. Other rumored names attached to upcoming films include Taika Waititi, Kevin Feige and a Rian Johnson trilogy.
