Kick Ass Movie Ladies of 2018: Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lawrence, Danai Gurira, Alicia Vikander

PROUD MARY - January 12

It's going to be a good year for women of color in action roles. "Empire's" Taraji P. Henson is an assassin in PROUD MARY. We've seen plenty of male assassins in this genre, but women can be just as lethal.

BLACK PANTHER - February 16

Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright and Florence Kasumba are flexing their muscles in Marvel's BLACK PANTHER as the kick ass team behind T'Chaka (Chadwick Boseman). "The Walking Dead" fans have already seen Danai Gurira kick butt as Michonne on the show, but she'll have far more action stunts in BLACK PANTHER.

ANNIHILATION - February 23

Natalie Portman leads an all-female team into a mysterious forest in this futuristic sci-fi thriller. Fresh off her scene-stealing performance in THOR:RAGNAROK, Tessa Thompson is part of this elite team along with first time actioneer Gina Rodriguez and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The film is directed by EX-MACHINA's Alex Garland.

RED SPARROW- March 2

Jennifer Lawrence plays a ballerina turned Russian spy in Francis Lawrence's adaptation of Jason Matthew's spy novel, "Red Sparrow." Joel Edgerton also stars as a CIA agent who Lawrence falls in love with.

A WRINKLE IN TIME  - March 9

Ava DuVernay's adaptation of the classic sci-fi fantasy book brings together powerhouse names such as Oprah, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon and young newcomer Storm Reid carries the whole film.

The Disney film is groundbreaking for having people of color behind and in front of the cameras in a genre that we rarely see diversity. The success of this film will set the course for future movies. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

TOMB RAIDER - March 16

Alicia Vikander takes over for Angelina Jolie in a reboot of the video game adaptation. Vikander has proven herself as an actress in many genres, and this action flick will certainly cement her status as a bona fide star.

OCEAN'S 8 - June 8

Luckily the failure of the all-female GHOSTBUSTERS didn't put a damper on other all-female movies like the upcoming OCEAN'S 8. The OCEAN'S ELEVEN reboot featuring an all-women heist team boasts great names behind it such as Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson , Rihanna and Awkwafina who set out to rob the Met Gala with Anne Hathaway as the target.

ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL - July 20

Robert Rodriguez tries his hand at manga and motion capture with an adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's manga - ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL. Produced and co-written by James Cameron,  the female cyborg in post apocalyptic world is played by relative newcomer Rosa Salazar (MAZE RUNNER) via motion capture.

Jennifer Connelly, Eiza Gonzales (BABY DRIVER) and Michelle Rodriguez also star.

Reported to cost $200 million, the ambitious Hollywood blockbuster certainly looks intriguing.

MORTAL ENGINES - Dec 14

Peter Jackson and his teams are behind another post apocalyptic world led by an actress. Jackson produces but doesn't helm MORTAL ENGINES directed by Christian Rivers. Another newcomer Icelandic actress Hera Hilmar takes on the responsibility of carrying the film as Hester Shaw.

After the "Sixty Minute War," cities survive by moving around on giant wheels attacking and devouring other small towns to replenish their supplies.
