Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig is bringing audiences back to Narnia with Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, and the rollout signals a major cinematic event. The epic origin story will debut exclusively in IMAX theaters starting February 10, 2027, followed by a wide global theatrical release on February 12, before landing on Netflix April 2, 2027.
Based on C. S. Lewis’s beloved novel, The Magician’s Nephew marks the first-ever screen adaptation of the book, which serves as the origin story of Narnia. Published in 1955, the novel explores the magical creation of the world through the iconic lion Aslan—an idea that deeply inspired Gerwig from childhood.
Gerwig both writes and directs the film, assembling a mix of rising stars and A-list talent. Newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell lead the cast alongside Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep.
“Working with Netflix to bring this film to life has been extraordinary,” Gerwig said, emphasizing the importance of experiencing the film in theaters first, particularly in IMAX. She also shared a personal connection to the material, recalling how Lewis’ story of “a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life” sparked her imagination as a child.
With a multi-platform release strategy and a filmmaker known for her distinct storytelling voice, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew aims to capture both longtime fans and a new generation, delivering a magical, large-scale fantasy experience across theaters and streaming.
