NEON has announced that acclaimed filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda's latest drama, Sheep in the Box, will open in New York and Los Angeles on July 24, 2026, before expanding nationwide.
The film premiered in competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and marks Koreeda's emotional exploration of artificial intelligence while maintaining the human-centered storytelling that earned him international acclaim with Shoplifters.
Sheep in the Box stars Haruka Ayase, Daigo, and Rimu Kuwaki. The film follows grieving parents Otone and Kensuke, who rent a humanoid replica of their deceased son, Kakeru, from a company specializing in replacements for bereaved families.
While the humanoid initially helps restore a sense of normalcy, its presence gradually uncovers unresolved grief, hidden regrets, and emotional wounds. As the family struggles with loss and acceptance, the humanoid begins secretly seeking out other humanoid children, setting the stage for a poignant and thought-provoking drama.
The release reunites Koreeda with NEON following their collaboration on Broker, starring Song Kang-ho. Produced by Kaoru Matsuzaki and Megumi Bans, Sheep in the Box is a Gaga and Toho production.
