With Spider-Man: Brand New Day ruling North America for six straight weekends and The Odyssey still sitting near the top in its eighth week — while overtaking Spidey globally this weekend — the two blockbusters continue to have a stranglehold on the late-summer box office. New movies keep arriving, but moviegoers don't seem ready to move on from Spidey and Odysseus just yet.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day held onto the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office for an impressive sixth consecutive weekend, taking in an estimated $18 million from Friday through Sunday. The Tom Holland-led superhero blockbuster has now amassed $917.8 million domestically after six weeks in theaters.
Right behind Spidey is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which sailed back into second place with $13 million in its eighth weekend. The epic has now earned approximately $584.8 million domestically. Even more impressive, The Odyssey overtook Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the global weekend box office, proving the two summer juggernauts are still battling it out nearly two months after The Odyssey first hit theaters.
The staying power of both films is particularly striking given the arrival of new releases. Neither By Any Means, which debuted at No. 4 with $7.4 million, nor Onslaught, which opened outside the Top 10 with $1.9 million, could knock the summer giants from their perch.
Meanwhile, Coyote vs. Acme held strong in its second weekend with $11.3 million, landing at No. 3, while Insidious: Out of the Further scared up another $6.5 million in its third weekend for fifth place.
Disney also brought Cars back to theaters for its 20th anniversary, and audiences were apparently ready for another lap with Lightning McQueen. The re-release raced into sixth place with $6.1 million.
At No. 7, Buddy pulled off the rare feat of actually increasing its weekend business, earning $5.7 million — up about 5% from its opening weekend. PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, The End of Oak Street and Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars round out the Top 10.
