Toy Story 5 Explained: Why Toy Story 4's Ending Matters

Toy Story 5 Prep: Everything You Need to Remember from Toy Story 4

Before watching Toy Story 5 this weekend, here’s a recap of the life-changing events from Toy Story 4 (2019) that directly impact the story for the fifth installment.

When we last saw Woody in Toy Story 4, the lovestruck Woody found his new mission and girlfriend in Bo Peep.  The cowboy chose to stay with Bo Peep at the carnival to help lost toys find new children.

Woody handed over his sheriff’s badge to Jessie, passing leadership of Bonnie’s toys to the cowgirl. Buzz and Jessie returned home to Bonnie at the end of the movie without Woody.

Bonnie plays a major part in Toy Story 5

A younger Bonnie was first introduced at the end of Toy Story 3 when a college-bound Andy gifted his cherished toy collection to the young girl. She later appeared in Toy Story 4, where she created Forky, who provided some of the film’s biggest laughs.

The events of Toy Story 4 lead into the plot of 5.  Jessie steps into her leadership role to help Bonnie overcome her shyness and find friends. In the process, we learn more about Jessie’s origins.

Take some tissues because this Toy Story movie hits on a more personal level than the other films.
