WEAPONS, directed by Zach Cregger, delivers an even better horror movie than his last which ranks among the best and unique in the genre. Fans of Cregger’s wicked sense of horror in BARBARIAN will appreciate his follow-up.
Children from the same classroom disappear, except for one child. The student's teacher, Julia Garner’s Justine, is the focus of the investigation. Josh Brolin’s grieving character is determined to find the connection between his son and classmates who disappeared from his classroom.
The title is misleading, suggesting modern warfare, but the twist implies something else, leaving it open to interpretation.
Cregger avoids obvious scare tactics, instead showing the threat coming and intensifying the horror as the characters are oblivious to their fate.
Like BARBARIAN, Cregger balances horror with the absurd, producing nervous laughter in a communal setting.
Julia Garner delivers a spectacular performance, continuing her rise in Hollywood since her memorable debut in the Ozark series. Josh Brolin also delivers a unique performance as an obsessed and desperate parent trying to lay blame on an easy target.
The story is told in chapters, making the film feel longer than its runtime, but WEAPONS is hands down the best horror movie of this decade.
Cregger proves himself a master of horror, and we can’t wait to see what he does with his next project, a reboot of the RESIDENT EVIL movie.
WEAPONS is a must-watch on the big screen in a communal setting. It’s now playing in movie theaters.
