Review: Shaman -A Fresh Exorcism Tale That Cuts Deeper

When it comes to exorcism movies, how does SHAMAN stand out in the horror genre?

Plot

A missionary family resides among a rural indigenous population in Ecuador, attempting to convert the locals to Christianity. However, when their son, Elliot (Jett Kylne), ventures into a forbidden cave despite being warned not to, he emerges accompanied by a demonic entity. Blaming the local shaman for their son’s possession, the parents seek the intervention of the local priest to free the boy from the demonic spirit. But is it merely an exorcism, or is there something more sinister at play?

Characters

Candice (Sarah Canning) and Joel (Daniel Gillies) appear to be devoted missionaries, dedicated to converting the local indigenous population. However, when they face the challenge of their son’s possession, their actions reveal a side to them that is not entirely Christian.

Director Antonio Negret skillfully explores the missionaries’ hypocrisy, juxtaposing religious beliefs to highlight the true nature of the “savages.”

The Scares

SHAMAN delivers mildly frightening moments, relying on the usual jump scares. While the young actor, Jett Kylne, gives his best as the possessed Elliot, his blank stares do not fully capture the demonic intensity.

The Ending

The outcome of the film will leave you in disbelief. Given Elliot’s mother’s nature, her actions should not be a surprise, but her heartlessness is truly twisted.

Ranking: Exorcism Movies

SHAMAN stands out from the ordinary exorcist movie. While it shares some common plot elements, the unique setting and the juxtaposition of religious beliefs make it a standout film.

The remote village nestled at the foot of a volcano exudes a sense of foreignness, adding to the film’s unsettling atmosphere. Given the dark history of missionaries converting indigenous people, the film questions the necessity of converting a group of people who live in harmony with nature and possess a rich cultural heritage to a religion steeped in hypocrisy.

SHAMAN will be available in select movie theaters on August 8 and on Digital Platforms the same day.
