Wardriver puts a modern spin on the classic heist formula while hitting all the familiar tropes of the genre. A strong cast led by Dane DeHaan (Oppenheimer), Sasha Calle (The Flash, The Rip), Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice, Sicario), and Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World: Dominion) infuses the story with intrigue and high stakes.
This heist trades bank vaults for Wi-Fi networks and getaway cars for rolling cybercrime hubs. DeHaan stars as Cole, a lone wolf hacker who cruises the streets, skimming from institutions on the go to stay untraceable and avoid violence. His carefully controlled system is upended when he’s blackmailed into pulling off a risky job targeting a mob-connected lawyer—dragging him into a far more dangerous game than he’s used to playing.
The film leans comfortably into familiar genre beats, from a seductive femme fatale (Calle) to escalating double-crosses and a high-stakes score. While the betrayals aren’t particularly shocking, the film keeps things engaging with bursts of action and a few unexpected turns in the unfolding events. Unlike most heist films, which thrive on glossy visuals and stylish locations, this one leans into a rougher, grittier aesthetic.
Jeffrey Donovan adds some grit to the criminal underworld angle, though the story never fully breaks free from its predictable structure.
Ultimately, Wardriver is a serviceable heist thriller with a digital-age twist, but it doesn’t quite do enough to stand out in a crowded genre. It’s an easy watch for fans of tech-driven crime stories, though with its digital release just around the corner, this is one you might want to catch at home rather than rush out to see in theaters.
