Darth Maul Finally Takes Center Stage in New Animated Series 'Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord'

One of Star Wars’ most iconic villains is finally stepping out of the shadows. Lucasfilm has released the first trailer for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, an all-new animated series from Dave Filoni that gives Darth Maul his long-overdue spotlight—and his first true solo story.

Set after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Shadow Lord follows Maul as he plots to rebuild his shattered criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. No longer just a weapon of the Sith, Maul is positioned here as a calculating antihero, driven by vengeance, survival, and the desire to control his own destiny. The series also introduces a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who may become the apprentice Maul has long sought, adding a dangerous new dynamic to his quest for power.

Created by Dave Filoni and developed alongside Matt Michnovetz, the series leans into a pulpy, crime-driven corner of the galaxy—territory Maul has flirted with before, but never fully owned. With Sam Witwer returning as the definitive voice of Maul, alongside Gideon Adlon and Oscar® nominee Wagner Moura, Shadow Lord promises a darker, more character-focused chapter in Star Wars animation.

After years of scene-stealing appearances across The Phantom Menace, The Clone Wars, and Rebels, Maul – Shadow Lord finally allows one of the franchise’s most tragic and compelling figures to carry his own narrative. For fans who’ve long argued that Darth Maul deserved more than side-story status, this is the moment they’ve been waiting for.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premieres on Disney+ April 6, 2026, with two episodes dropping weekly and the final chapters arriving fittingly on May the 4th.
