Mexican luchadors dominated 1970s Mexican cinema with Santo and Blue Demon starring in numerous films as crime-fighting superheroes. EL HALCON director and co-writer Eduardo Valenzuela wants to return the masked wrestlers to their glory. CineMovie sat down with El Halcon director and star Ianis Guerrero to talk about the film which borrows many elements from the classic Mexican superhero movies.
In El Halcón, opening in theaters Friday, September 13, Ianis Guerrero portrays Pancho, also known as Halcón Jr., the son of a retired wrestler who must embrace his heritage to rescue his son from a ruthless crime boss, making him a pivotal character in the story.
In his prime, El Halcón was a champion of justice until a tragic event caused wrestlers to vanish from the public eye. Now, thirty years later, Ramón, the retired wrestler, runs a taquería with his son Pancho in Tijuana, where they face a gang of criminals terrorizing the city. When Pancho decides to fight back and don the mask, he is kidnapped by his father's old adversary, El Capitán. Ramón must return to the ring, with the help of Detective Reyes, to save his son. El Halcón will rise again, driven by a thirst for vengeance.
