James Gunn's SUPERMAN is a triumph of tone and character, breathing new life into the legendary hero with a fresh yet faithful take. Leading the charge is David Corenswet, who truly embodies Superman. He brings a grounded charm, quiet strength, and—most importantly—deep empathy to the Man of Steel. This Superman feels like the one fans have longed to see: not just powerful, but profoundly human.
Nicholas Hoult delivers a standout performance as the diabolical Lex Luthor. With icy precision and palpable menace, Hoult’s Luthor is every bit the brilliant and ruthless adversary fans expect—and more. His presence crackles with intelligence and danger, making for a villain worthy of Superman’s ideals.
Also worthy of praise is Mr. Terrific (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS' Edi Gathegi, who indeed lives up to his name. Charismatic, competent, and full of surprises, he becomes an instant fan favorite and a standout member of this expanding DC universe.
Gunn’s direction captures both grandeur and heart. He doesn’t just give us spectacle—though there’s plenty of that—he gives us a Superman who feels. Through sharp writing, emotionally resonant moments, and a respect for the character’s core values, Gunn reclaims Superman's mythos for a new generation.
Gunn also advances the Man of Steel story without retreading familiar ground which past reboots failed to do. in this form, the franchise as much more possibilities.
This iteration of the DC superhero and friends is a fond reminder of Super Friends, the 70s and 80's cartoon series in light-heartedness and humor.
In short: this is the Superman I’ve always wanted. Hopeful, heroic, and deeply human.
SUPERMAN is in movie theaters on Friday, July 11.
