Guillermo del Toro has a genuine love of movies and the first preview definitely has nostalgia for classic monster movies like Godzilla and Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot. Many have called it Godzilla meets Transformers, which you can't help but think it. However, everything from the warning siren to the large crowds running is a homage to the old rather than the new. Unfortunately, they use a score we've heard a million times on action movies such as Battleship and Transformer. Please don't recycle that score anymore trailer houses.
Like Godzilla, the Pacific Rim monsters came from the sea depths as recounted by a character in the trailer. While you can't see the monsters very clearly, you get to know the operators of the giant robots. Idris Elba has one of the best lines in the trailer- "We're canceling the apocalypse."
With a sleek look and a bit of nostalgia for the classics, we're keeping our fingers crossed Guillermo del Toro can deliver on the final product when it opens July 11, 2013.
