Wes Craven Pranks New Stars of Scream 4

Wes CravenHayden Panettiere ("Heroes"), Emma Roberts, Anthony Anderson ("Law & Order'), and Rory Culkin joined Scream veterans Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell and David Arquette for the fourth installment of the Wes Craven franchise.  Wes Craven pulled a prank on the young stars during the production of SCRE4M and tweeted about it. The cast told their horror stories during a press event for the film at the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood.

The initiation began with Hayden Panettiere.  Wes Craven hid the prop guy in a closet wearing the Ghost face mask during one of the frightening scenes. Hayden describes the moment:   SPOILER ALERT!

"It's this whole dun-dun-da scene and think the might be in the closet and you open the closet and he's not there.  All of a sudden, he was there but he wasn't supposed to be there.  It was JB, our prop guy.  He scared me half to death and he disappeared.  I didn't see him until the next day.  I was looking around for him and I didn't see him until the next day.  He was like, 'Dude, I wanted to come back but I felt so bad.  You were so scared.' So, he definitely got me.  You try to front like you're all tough and then something jumps out of the closet and that was the end of the story."

Interview: David Arquette On Scream 4's Great Opening Scene

Anthony Anderson, who ironically starred in the Scream spoof Scary Movie, suffered the same fright by the same person but he didn't know Wes had pulled the same prank on Hayden.

"I had no idea that that's what he did to her.  I'm upstairs in the bedroom in the house.  I'm going through the closet.  Nobody's supposed to be in there.  I opened up the door.  I didn't know the prop guy's name but he jumped out in the mask with the knife and scared me shi**less to the point where I soiled myself."
Rory Culkin and Emma Roberts escaped Wes' prank but Wes probably spared Emma, a self-admitted scardey-cat.
"I get scared so easily.  My sister is 10 and she scares me with stupid things like fake spiders in my bed. My friends keep calling me and doing the voice and saying, "What's your favorite scary movie."  As much as I know it's a joke I still can't help but be like looking over my shoulder a little bit because it's creepy.

Rory Culkin admitted he had used the Ghost Face not on set but on his sister when he was younger.

"I stood in my sister's room in the corner for like half an hour until she saw the reflection of me behind her.  She freaked out and started slapping me."
The new cast didn't know what to expect from the creator of Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and Hills Have Eyes (1977) movies especially Anthony Anderson who grew up a fan of Craven's Last House on the Left.
"That's when I found out Wes really has a sense of humor and he's a really cool dude to work with and for.  I was expecting this weirdo, this creep, and all that.  I got a weirdo and a creep but in a great way.  Wes is the uncle and the grandfather that you want reading bedtime stories to your kids.  It was just fun, interesting to see him that way and to work with him in that capacity.  To be a part of a franchise like this and for it to be as successful as we hope it continues to be."

Movie Review: Scream 4

Hayden was surprised to see not only the funny side of Wes but a "kind of shy" and "quiet" person behind all those horror movies. Emma called her Scream 4 director a "mastermind" at what he does.   For a career spanning thirty years in Hollywood, "mastermind" is a good description for Wes Craven's lasting influence.

SCRE4M is in movie theaters April 15, 2011.
