This Fall, blockbusters and superhero flicks are taking a backseat once again to critical fair. Take a look at the quieter fare hitting movie theaters as we head into the holidays and award season.

The fall marks a return to school and the start of award season buzz. It also indicates the end to the summer onslaught of superheroes and big-budget flicks that didn't prove profitable. Marvel, however, has one up their sleeve with a sequel to Thor starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston.

September has one last hurrah for action films with Vin Diesel's return as Riddick. We'll also see the last performance by the dearly departed James Gandolfini in his last role with Enough Said opposite Julia Louise-Dreyfus. Award season buzz is already starting in September with Ron Howard's Rush starring Thor's Chris Hemsworth in a true story based on Formula One rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda.
