This Fall, blockbusters and superhero flicks are taking a backseat once again to critical fair. Take a look at the quieter fare hitting movie theaters as we head into the holidays and award season.
The fall marks a return to school and the start of award season buzz. It also indicates the end to the summer onslaught of superheroes and big-budget flicks that didn't prove profitable. Marvel, however, has one up their sleeve with a sequel to Thor starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston.

September has one last hurrah for action films with Vin Diesel's return as Riddick. We'll also see the last performance by the dearly departed James Gandolfini in his last role with Enough Said opposite Julia Louise-Dreyfus. Award season buzz is already starting in September with Ron Howard's Rush starring Thor's Chris Hemsworth in a true story based on Formula One rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda.

Sandra Bullock's romp in space seems to have a lot of tongues wagging for the Alfonso Cuaron outer space movie, Gravity, while Tom Hanks may be up for another Oscar with Captain Phillips. Other films causing award season buzz include 12 Years a Slave with Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Oscar contender Chiwetel Ejiofor.
For outrageous fun, October has it with Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa and the best looking cast with Ridley Scott's The Counselor starring Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, John Leguizamo and Javier Bardem sporting another wacky hairstyle.

November has plenty of adventures aimed at the young adults with Ender's Game and The Hunger Games sequel. But they'll all have to compete with the giant in the room - Thor and his hammer.
Heading into Thanksgiving, surprisingly there aren't many family-oriented fare with only Disney's Frozen and the animated film Free Birds being the only holiday season choices until the new year.
Several November films are aimed at mature entertainment such as Leonardo DiCaprio's turn as a crooked Wall Street executive in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, Last Vegas starring some of our favorite Hollywood veterans, Spike Jonz' Her and only two comedies in the bunch with Vince Vaughn in Delivery Man and The Best Man Holiday.
