'Fallout' Series Review: Ella Purnell and Walter Goggins Are Main Draw

Ella Purnell in Fallout Prime Video series

The setting and plot may be familiar in the post-nuclear fallout setting of Prime Video's adaptation of Bethesda Game Studios videogame, Fallout: A Post Nuclear, but actors Ella Purnell and Walter Goggins are captivating as unique characters that hook you through Fallout's eight episodes.

Two hundred years after the apocalypse, the wealthy live in underground Vaults while others survive the wasteland. The Prime Vido series follows a new character Lucy, a vault dweller (Purnell), who leaves the Vaults to find her kidnapped father (Kyle MacLachlan).

Produced by Westworld producer Jonathan Nolan, the post-apocalyptic wasteland is a familiar setting with its Wild West vibe except for one unique element. The nuclear war occurred in the 50s, so the soundtrack is largely tunes from that era. The nostalgic music alongside the images of the wasteland is powerful.

Actor Ella Purnell, best known for Tim Burton's MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN, is captivating to watch on screen through those soulful, adventurous eyes. Purnell's Lucy is a bit naive but she's badass, and those qualities endear her character almost instantly. Lucy is a beacon of hope but you fear she won't make it through this violent hellscape on the surface. That is what will keep you watching.

Walter Goggins never disappoints, and Fallout is no different. As the Ghoul, Goggins is frightening and menacing, but there may be a redemption arc for this character who we meet as a caring father in the first episode before the nuclear fallout.

The series is ultra-violent in a comic-book way, and it doesn't shy away from dark and depressing imagery like throwing a puppy into an incinerator. It's not for the faint of heart.

The series cast includes Moisés Arias (THE KING OF STATEN ISLAND), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks), Sarita Choudhury (Homeland), Michael Emerson (Person of Interest), Leslie Uggams (Deadpool), Frances Turner (The Boys), Dave Register (Heightened), Zach Cherry (Severance), Johnny Pemberton (ANT-MAN), Rodrigo Luzzi (DEAD RINGERS), Annabel O'Hagan (Law & Order: SVU), and Xelia Mendes-Jones (The Wheel of Time). It will be available to stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

All episodes of Fallout are currently available to stream on Prime Video.
